National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades (NMPANS)
Established in 1992, the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades (NMPANS) is the first marine park in Greece and one of the largest marine protected areas in Europe.
The area covers about 2,200 sq.km. Within the limits of the park, is the island of Alonnisos, which is the only inhabited island. Northwest of Alonnisos there is a complex of uninhabited islands, that are valuable shelter for many rare species of flora and fauna.
The park is an important area for many rare and endangered species. For example, the area hosts the most important remaining population of the Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) in the Mediterranean, with about 55 specimens.
In the park four species of dolphins it has been observed, the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and the gray dolphin (Grampus griseus).
Also, it has been found and the unknown Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris). In rare cases have been recorded and larger cetaceans such as sperm (Physeter macrocephalus).
